Are there arguments between housemates about the correct temperature in the house? I’m hot! I’m cold! This happens all year long in many homes. You’re not alone! Here’s some help in finding the right temperature setting that will help keep everyone comfortable and perhaps settle some arguments.
Firstly, you should know what the idea temperature in your home should be to keep everyone feeling content and comfy. Most folks feel differently and that’s when the discussions begin. The best way to start thinking about the ideal temperature at home is know what the recommended thermostat setting should be when the house is empty. That temp is 16*C to 18*C in the winter and when everyone is home, aim for 21*C. In the summer, the ideal temperature is 26*C when your house is empty and 25*C when people are at home during the day but not sleeping overnight.
The temperature set on the thermometer is a different story when it comes to sleeping. In the winter, the thermostat could be dropped as low as 17*C because most of us use heavier bedding in the winter. However, if you have an infant or toddler in the house, add a degree or two and make sure they’re dressed warm. It’s a good idea to have a programmable thermostat that will drop the temp for sleeping and warm up the house before everyone rises. Finding a thermostat setting that everyone can agree on the summer in the summer can be more difficult. We all know how hard it is to sleep in a hot room. The perfect overnight sleeping temperature is thought to be 16*C to 19*C. As in the winter, use your programmable thermostat to adjust the temperature at bedtime and prior to waking. Using a programmable thermostat will save on your energy costs and stop people from constantly changing the thermostat. If are a “Snowbird,” it’s a good idea to keep your home’s temperature at a steady 13*C to 15*C. This temp will prevent pipes from freezing and save on energy costs.
You really should have a programmable thermostat installed. The cost savings to your energy bill will pay for the thermostat. People have saved 10% with the use of these types of thermostats.
