Will The Rain Hurt My A/C Unit?
Let's See...

The past few days have been very wet throughout Hamilton, Niagara, Waterloo, and the GTA. With all the rain we've had, customers keep asking us if all this rain will hurt their air conditioning units. The answer is NO! Rain will not cause any significant damage to your unit. Your A/C will not need to be protected from normal rainfall.
You can safely run your air conditioner during a rain storm. Central air conditioners are made up of two separate devices: an evaporator coil, which is located inside your furnace, and the compressor unit which is located outside your house.
The compressor is exposed to the elements and is designed to withstand the elements (rain, hail, windstorms). The electrical connections and components are sealed to be impervious to the indirect moisture posed by rainfall.
The only time your cooling system is at risk is if there is a flood. Your compressor is not built to be submerged in water. This is why most units sit on a raised platform.
Flooding is an extreme circumstance. If storms result in flooding and you have standing water around your unit, you should stop using the system, and turn off power at your home's electrical panel to prevent damage.
It is perfectly safe to use your air conditioner when it is raining outside and doing so will help to dry out the humid air in your home. Unless there is an issue with your A/C unit, it should work in all conditions.
