What's Your Air Flow Like? Have Your Vents Been Checked?
Have You Checked Your Vents Recently?

On these hot summer evenings in Hamilton, you may notice that your air vents are putting out as much cold air as you would like. Trying to sleep in a hot bedroom isn't fun, but before you call us, you can check a couple of things. Most often, poor airflow from your AC is the result of a dirty air filter or ductwork that has become blocked, crimped, or even disconnected.
Step 1.
Check your air filter. If it is dirty replace it with a clean one. Clogged, dirty filters block normal airflow and reduce efficiency significantly.
With normal airflow obstructed, air that bypasses the filter may carry dirt directly into the evaporator coil and impair the heat-absorbing capacity. Replacing a dirty, clogged filter with a clean one can lower your air conditioner's energy consumption by 5% to 15%.
Step 2.
Check your ductwork in your attic, basement, or crawlspaces for any openings or separations. In houses with forced-air cooling systems, ducts are used to distribute conditioned air throughout the house. They distribute air that’s been cooled throughout your living space and return air to your furnace or AC unit to be reconditioned and then recirculated again. A typical home has about 20 to 30per percent of the air that moves through the system lost due to leaks, holes, and poorly connected ducts. Air ducts that are leaky, crimped, disconnected, or not insulated properly waste energy and are a big contributor to poor indoor air quality.
Step 3.
Check the registers to be sure all the vents are wide open, and nothing is blocking the airflow into the room. Sometimes during cleaning, a vent can become closed or partially shut. Make sure all vents are open. If large furniture is blocking the vent, try to move the furniture to allow the full flow of air into the room.
